New Delhi, Jan 01: Cops beware; there will be no beating this one -- the new e-beat system that will keep tabs on policemen electronically, specially at night. The Indian government has given the go-ahead to set up electronic tags that will keep an eye, quite literally, on beat constables as they go, or don't go, about their business.
This is part of the exercise on modernisation of police forces, undertaken by the Home Ministry that functions under Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani.
The system will work like this: A reader (that looks like a torch) will have to be compulsorily carried by the cop on beat; electronic tags will be installed at various locations which the constable on duty has to swipe with the reader. The system works much in the same way that a credit card does.
