The US and Russia could sign an energy security deal this week which could include a Moscow offer to make up for any shortfall in oil supply to the west resulting from crises in other parts of the world. The deal could be sealed at a meeting between American President George W Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin next week, a report in news magazine 'Newsweek' said.
In return, the US would help Russia develop its energy resources and integrate Central Asia into the world's energy markets, the report said.
If you look at the map, you see that the threats and opportunities for both Washington and Moscow are heavily in Russia's neighbourhood, whether it's the spectre of Islamic radicalism and narcotics trafficking or the prospect of gaining new oil sources, a senior US diplomat was quoted as saying. Working with Russia now is in our larger strategic interest, he said.
We can collaborate and promote stability in Central Asia, preventing more radical ideologies from taking root there. It's a win-win for both of us, the official said.
