The death sentence to an accused for murdering his mother and wiping out the entire family of his brother over a land dispute has been converted into life-term by the Supreme Court saying “He may repent for rest of life for commission of such ghastly act.”
While upholding the conviction of Prakash Dhawal Patil of Malegaon in Maharashtra for killing his mother Kesarbai, brother Supadu Patil, his wife and three children on October 23, 1996, a bench comprising justice M B Shah and justice R P Sethi, said he would serve a life sentence but would not be released from jail before completing 20 years of imprisonment.
The court turned down Maharashtra government's appeal against the high court order acquitting from murder charges Dhawal Patil's son Sandeep, who allegedly had abetted the crime. He made a confession later in the court.
The accused-two (Sandeep) in his confessional statement has stated that after the commission of the offence, he found tears in the eyes of his father. This may indicate that Dhawal Patil may repent for rest of his life for the commission of such ghastly act, The apex court observed.
