Pondicherry, June 20: The Centre has in principle approved the proposal to set up a special economic zone(SEZ) in Pondicherry, chief minister N Rangaswamy said today. Rangaswamy, accompanied by the district collector A Anbarasu and other senior officials, visited today Sedarapet village, near here, to inspect a possible site for the SEZ.
He told reporters here that a within six months, a total of 307 hectares would be acquired for setting up the zone.
He said zone might be set up between Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry because of the possibility of linking the zone with a broad gauge track.
With power tariff being low in the union territory compared to other states, more and more industrialists were seeking to set up their businesses in Pondicherry, he said adding that industries causing environmental pollution or utilising excessive sub-soil water would not be encouraged.
