Basti, Jan 24: Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) activists today again gathered outside the Munderwa sugar mills, protesting alleged failure of the district administration in persuading the mill to clear payment arrears to farmers and buy sugarcane at Rs 110 per quintal.

As the district administration has failed to persuade the mill to clear cane arrears and purchase the sugarcane at the rate of Rs 110 per quintal, the BKU has decided to hold the dharna, a BKU spokesman said. During the agitation last time, the administration had promised that it would pursuade the railways to stop some of the important trains at the Munderwa railway station but the promise has not been fulfilled, the spokesman added.

Police have been deployed and the route of state transport buses has been diverted as a precautionary measure, official sources said. Agitation over cane arrears had turned violent in December 2002, leading to the death of farmers in police firing and several others including policemen sustaining injuries.
