New Delhi, May 12: Former BJP leader Govindacharya
has ruled out a re-entry into party politics, saying he needed
a "wider canvas" for his work for the cause of the "last
person in the queue".
"I have decided not to become a member of any political
party, but I will be active in public life. The theme of my
work is `antyodaya', which is about serving the last person in
the queue," Govindacharya, who turned 60 yesterday, told mediapersons.
He declined to talk about current politics, especially election. Attending a function to celebrate his 60th birthday on the outskirts of the capital last evening, he said at this "important juncture of life" his mind was made up on what his sphere of work should be. "I want to be involved in three forms of activities -- intellectual, constructive and agitational," he said, elaborating that he was involved in building research institutes and cooperating with agitational bodies like the swadeshi jagran manch.
"Fighting for the deprived sections, the marginalised, the landless, my work would, however, have political connotations as it would hit at the power structure," he said. Denying that it was any unhappiness with BJP that led to his decision to quit it, Govindacharya said, "for many years I served the party, was in it through the thick and the thin. But what I want to achieve needs a much wider canvas than a political party can offer."
Earlier, addressing the function, he said India was fast becoming a country driven by consumerism, adding his dream was for a society which was a "low-cost, low-capital and savings-oriented."
