New Delhi, Nov 21: The National Commission for Women yesterday initiated an inquiry into the alleged rape of a fourth-year student of Maulana Azad Medical College on last Friday and convened a high-level meeting to discuss various issues concerning the security of girl students in the campus.
NCW chairperson Poornima Advani, alongwith Commission members Shanta Reddy and Baby Rani Maurya, visited the site of the incident and the college this afternoon and held discussions with senior college officials. The team, part of an inquiry committee instituted to probe the case, decided to convene a meeting of the Delhi Home Secretary, Delhi Police Commissioner, head of the crime against women cell in the Delhi Police, Chancellors of universities and principals of colleges in the capital on November 25 to discuss strategies to prevent such occurrences in and around the campus area.
The committee members met officials of the college and students in the girls' hostel to ascertain the security arrangement made by college authorities before and after the incident.

The students told the NCW chairperson that the inhabitants felt insecure as eve-teasing had become a common phenomena inside the campus, where there was no check on the movement of outsiders.

The girls demanded that necessary measures be taken by college authorities and police to strengthen security inside the campus and ensure a sense of security among students.

The girls handed over a memorandum to the NCW team wherein they demanded increase in security guards in the campus and their stationing at all entry and exit points, proper lighting of the campus area and a helpline within the campus where girls could seek assistance in case of distress.
