Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 31: Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence will attend a presentation on the functioning of Southern Air Command when they visit the SAC headquarters here today.
The high-profile committee, headed by Madan Lal Khurana, include former Lok Sabha Speaker Shivraj Patil, former Union Ministers Ram Vilas Pawan, K P Sing Dev, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, former Army Chief Gen Shankar Roy Chowdhary and nuclear scientist Dr Raja Ramanna.
The members will visit the SAC base at Akkulam, on the outskirts of the city, an official release said here.
Formed in 1984, SAC operates half a squadron of an-32 transport aircraft and a unit of mi-8 helicopters, primarily looking after the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and to an extent the Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands in the Arabian Sea.
The command also has Air Defence Radar, responsible for keeping an eye on the vast southern skies. The command is located close to strategically vulnerable sealanes of communication.
