New Orleans, Jan 25: The New Orleans Hornets hold on for a 97-91 victory over the visiting Denver Nuggets.
Jamaal Magloire scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, as the injury-depleted New Orleans Hornets pulled out a 97-91 win over the Denver Nuggets in New Orleans on Friday (January 23). Darrell Armstrong added 18 points and nine assists for the Hornets, who were playing without star guard Baron Davis for the second consecutive game due to an ankle injury. With forward Jamal Mashburn and guard David Wesley also currently sidelined with injuries, New Orleans lacked significant firepower, but still emerged victorious.
P.J. Brown contributed 16 points and Robert Traylor added 13 off the bench, helping the Hornets snap a two-game losing streak.

Carmelo Anthony posted a game-high 24 points for the Nuggets, who were attempting to win their fourth straight game. Andre Miller added 17 points and Voshon Lenard chipped in 15 as Denver lost its third straight in New Orleans.

The first quarter was tightly contested and the two teams were deadlocked at 24-24 at its conclusion.

The game remained close until the Hornets scored eight of the final 11 points of the first half. Two free throws by Brown with seconds remaining in the quarter made it 53-48 in favour of New Orleans at the break.

Denver hung close but never did get even in the third quarter. The Hornets' lead reached as many as nine on two separate occasions. The deficit, however, still stood at five, 76-71, after three quarters of play.

A 7-2 spurt to open the fourth quarter gave the Hornets the largest lead of the game at 83-73. But Denver slowly chipped away at the deficit and closed within two after a pair of baskets by Anthony, the second a dunk with 2:45 remaining in the contest.

Miller's three-point play slightly over a minute later made it a one-point game at 92-91. The Nuggets then had a pair of chances to jump ahead, but came up empty on both occasions.

Stacey Augmon hit three free throws in the final minute to push the lead to four, and Steve Smith completed the scoring with a pair of free throws of his own.
