London, Aug 21: Liverpool will become the Bollywood of the UK, a pair of Asian film producers have promised. The attraction for Indian cinema has led two Indian brothers to convert Liverpool into the Indian movie capital of Britain.
Ajay and Vijay Makol, from Wallasey, are reprtedly in talks with Mumbai-based movie executives about filming a multi-million pound production in the city. The producers from AP Media and Broadcasting, based in Liverpool Film Studios, Kirkdale, said a deal will be signed within 12 months.
Vijay, 38, with his screen name as Kumar claims to have six Bollywood films to his credit and wants "to use our connections with Bollywood to bring these kind of films to Liverpool. We think it will take about a year. We will initially attract Bollywood film producers here and then we hope to do our film as well. Producers in Bombay are looking for great locations and they want incentives from local people."
To showcase Liverpool the Makol brothers have shot a 20-minute Bollywood style love story which they are planning to send to film producers in India. The film Bombay Beauty, shot at various locations in the city, is the story of an Asian teenager from London who travels to Liverpool to study at the Liverpool John Moores University.
Ajay, 43, said: "We are sending it to 18 film festivals including the Raindance Festival in London and the Cork Festival in Ireland. The film looks at the relationship between Asian teenagers and their families and shows how cultural attitudes are slowly changing."
The brothers, having moved from London to Liverpool this year, are also said to be holding talks with Channel 4. They want to film an Asian soap opera in the city. Named Broadway 124, more than a dozen of the cast of the series have been selected while others are being auditioned. Channel 4 reportedly has asked to see the pilot episode.
