New Delhi, Aug 17: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government faces tomorrow the first no-confidence motion without any real threat of being defeated on the floor of the Lok Sabha but the Opposition-sponsored exercise is likely to throw up a lot of heat and dust and bring to surface possible fissures in the ruling coalition. NDA constituent DMK has opposed attempts to woo its arch rival AIADMK and is yet to decide how it will vote on the motion tabled by Congress president Sonia Gandhi which comes significantly ahead of the crucial assembly polls in five states, dubbed as the dress rehearsal for the Lok Sabha elections next year.
With the arithmetic comfortably loaded in its favour with a big margin of 100 separating the two sides despite the ambivalent stand of DMK, the BJP-led coalition as well as Opposition do not see the motion merely as a numbers game.
Though taken by surprise at the Congress move, which is seen as an attempt to show its strength in its design as the rallying point for the Opposition, the government is unperturbed and is planning to turn the tables on the Opposition, particularly its leader Sonia Gandhi, by using the occasion to project its achievements.
In a two-day debate on Monday and Tuesday, that is likely to see charges and counter-charges by the two sides, the Congress strategy is to embarrass the Vajpayee government by attacking it on matters like national security, in the wake of the CVC-PAC issue, coffins scam and Tehelka expose.
