Close on the heels of Pakistan's refusal, Iran has agreed to extend transit facility for Afghanistan-bound Indian wheat, provided there are adequate safeguards to prevent any possible contamination of Iranian airspace.
“We are ready to allow Indian aid including wheat to Afghanistan to pass through Iran, but the commodity should be properly packaged in air-tight containers to eliminate risk of fungus, if any, impregnating Iranian airspace, A top Iranian official told a news agency. He said a request to access the Iranian territory for delivering food-aid to war-ravaged Afghanistan has been received from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs after Pakistan refused to grant the facility on grounds of contagious fungus in the produce.
Iran has acceded to the request as the aid is on a government to government basis and disease-proof packaging will ensure that its own farms will not be affected by any possible fungus in the commodity, he added. The wheat can be delivered from any of the West Indian ports to Iran's Chabahar Port in the Oman Sea and then move by land to Afghanistan.
Chabahar is a free port around 400 kilometres from Iran- Afghan border compared to 1000 kms from the more famous Bandar Abbas Port.
