The film, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles, is based on the life of Aligarh Muslim University professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, who was suspended because of his sexual orientation. He was later found dead in his room.

"'Aligarh': A brave film by a brave filmmaker! An outstanding starcast," Bhatt, 67, wrote and retweeted Mehta's post which announced that film's trailer has crossed 1.75 million views on Youtube.

The "Saaransh" director earlier presented Mehta's film "CityLights". "Aligarh" will hit theatres on February 26.
