No formula to write a blockbuster film: Rajkumar Hirani
Bollywood filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani says that it is the content of a movie that matters the most
Mumbai: Bollywood filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani feels one shouldn't attempt to make blockbuster film but should focus on good content.
"It is a pompous topic of how to make a blockbuster. We did not know about the topic (at MAMI festival). There is no way to write a blockbuster film. One should not attempt to write a film thinking it will be a blockbuster. Make a film for yourself... If you like it then people will also like it," Hirani said on the sidelines of MAMI festival here.
For the 52-year-old director, who has made blockbuster films like "Munnabhai MBBS", "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and "3 Idiots", said the meaning of a superhit film is the connection with audience.
"I think the actual blockbuster film is something that touches audience. I would chose heart-buster than blockbuster. It is good if a film makes a place in the hearts of audience than just making money at the box office. There is no point if people do not remember the film," he said.
His last movie "PK" was a huge hit and for him the success of his last film doesn't matter much.
"We make a hit or flop film but life goes on. We can't cut from that (success or failure of a film) but we look at every film as a new film. Just because we had a successful film doesn't mean we will strive less. We strive hard for every film ...We are in no rush to make a film. We are striving to make good films," Hirani said.
Both Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi feel times are changing and people are coming up with interesting stories.
"I think after 'Munnabhai' people thought of writing new and different kind of films. There is change in writing we see great work coming out. Films like 'Paan Singh Tomar', 'Lunch Box', 'Piku', 'Queen' had great stories. These films are unique," Abhijat said.
Expressing similar views, Hirani said, "I think times are changing. Earlier 10-15 years back there was love story or action film...Shooting in Switzerland. Today we have a film like 'Masaan' and 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' all kind of films with great content doing well. It is great time for cinema."
