Lucknow, Oct 05: Four persons were killed and an equal number of security personnel injured in police firing and stone pelting incidents in a village in Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh, an official said today. Trouble began when senior officials accompanied by police went to Devraj Pipra village late last night to persuade one Lalji Mishra to call off his indefinite hunger strike demanding a bridge over Choti Gandak River, Principal Secretary (Home) Anil Kumar told reporters here.

As the officials were trying to Pursuade Mishra, a mob started throwing stones at them, Kumar said adding police fired in self-defence in which four persons were killed. While three persons died on-the-spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital, he said adding four policemen were injured in stone pelting and hospitalised.

The incident sparked off tension in the village and the state government suspended SHO of Ramkola Police Station, who opened fire on the mob, and transferred the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police, he said.

A probe has been ordered into the incidents by divisional commissioner Gorakhpur who has been asked to submit his report within two days, Kumar said. The government also announced a compensation of Rs one lakh each to the families of the four persons, he said.

Meanwhile, the situation in the village was tense but under control, the official said.
