Mumbai, Jan 18: The sensational murder of social activist Navleen Kumar, who had put up a decade-old struggle against 'land sharks' has been solved with the arrest of two local gangsters yesterday, police said today. The news of Navleen, who was murdered on the terrace of her residence at Nallasopara in adjacent thane district on June 19 last, had been hitting headlines for the past couple of months following information that she had become a soft target of the builder lobby against whom she had been putting up a spirited fight for the rights of land owners.
Following a parallel inquiry into the case by detection crime branch, police were able to study indepth Navleen's over-decade old fight against builder lobby, indulging in land grabbing.
The study of her profile led to the team zeroing on few local notorious gangsters with whom she had crossed swords in the past. One Manek Patil alias Mama, with whom she had been battling, was found to be serving life imprisonment. However, police were able to trace one of his aides Ganesh Patil, who had been handling gang's activities in mama's absence.
On keeping close watch, Patil was found to maintain contact with Mama in prison. Further investigations revealed that he had played a vital role in Navleen's murder.
Patil along with an accomplice Samir were arrested near Mahalaxmi race course yesterday and ammunition seized from them. Samir confirmed that he and his slain associate Sanjay Gangurde had been hired by Patil to eliminate Navleen, police added. Bureau Report
