Gangtok, Nov 28: Sikkim government has constituted a women's commission to make an in-depth study on the economic, social and health situations of women with particular emphasis on the under-developed tribal areas.
The commission, headed by Chandrakala Cintury, presently the secretary of state's social welfare department, was asked to compile information on instances of offences against women including those related to dowry, rape, kidnapping, criminal abduction, eve-teasing, immoral trafficking, medical negligence in child birth etc, an official release said today.
It would also make studies on women's working condition in factories, establishments, construction sites and other venues recommend to the government on the basis of specific reports, measures for improving their condition.
The commission has been mandated to receive complaints on atrocities on women and offences against them, deprivation of their rights on minimum wages, basic health and maternity issues, non-compliance of policy decision of the government, rehabilitation of deserted and destitute women and those forced into prostitution, the release said.
The eight-member panel had been set up on October 21 after the Sikkim state commission for women act 2001 was passed by the legislature, it said. Bureau Report
