Japan, Apr 13: Scott Sharp of the USA has won the Indy Japan 300, the third race of the Indy Racing League series. Kenny Brack of Sweden, the 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner, finished second, and Felipe Giaffone of Brazil, the 2001 Rookie of the Year, was third.
Scott, the 1996 overall co-champion, took full advantage as a host of favourites crashed out of the race. IRL series points leader Tony Kanaan of Brazil, pole sitter Scott Dixon of New Zealand and Tomas Scheckter of South Africa all bowed out of the race while challenging for the lead.
Scheckter hit the wall on the 168th lap at the 1.5 mile Twin Ring Motegi track, north of Tokyo, when he attempted to pass Kanaan and lost control of the car. Dixon and Kanaan, the respective winners of the season-opening and second races at Homestead and Phoenix last month, collided on the 178th lap to surrender the lead and exit the contest.
It was Sharp's eighth career victory in the IRL series to tie Sam Hornish and Buddy Lazier for the all-time series lead. Michael Andretti, who is going to retire at the Indianapolis 500, was fourth, followed by fellow American Al Unser Jr at fifth.
