New Delhi, Sept 15: President A P J Abdul Kalam today said a strong global compact was being forged to combat the upsurge in terrorism, insurgency and extremist activities as democratic societies cannot succumb to violence and terror unleashed by disgruntled elements. Speaking at a banquet in honour of visiting Bhutan King Jigme Singye Wangchuk here, he said, "We are all aware that recent years have witnessed an upsurge in terrorism, insurgency and extremist activities globally as well as in our region."
"A strong global compact is being forged to combat this menace. Democratic societies cannot succumb to violence and terror unleashed by disgruntled elements. I am glad that our two countries are cooperating closely in addressing these issues."
On Indo-Bhutanese relations, he said it was based on the firm foundations of shared historical and cultural linkages and it is also a dynamic and progressive relationship constantly searching for new avenues of cooperation, new complementaries and new opportunities to strengthen itself.
