New Delhi, Dec 26: Despite apparent rise in crime, particularly against women, Delhi Police today claimed the metropolis was among the safest capitals for women and the crime rate has declined due to pro-active policing, preventive measures, professional investigation and public participation. "As a result of pro-active policing, strong preventive action, professional investigation of crime and active public cooperation/participation in crime preventive measures, Delhi Police has sustained the declining trend in crime and improved detection during the last three years," city police Commissioner Radhey Shyam Gupta said at his annual press conference here.
While the number of heinous crimes have come down by 11 per cent, non-heinous crimes and total cases under Indian Penal Code have declined by nine per cent each, he said.
Pointing out that only 383 cases of rape were recorded this year as against 384 last year, Gupta said "it is unfair to label Delhi as an unsafe place for women. A comparative study about the incidents and prosecution of rape cases with us department of justice indicates Delhi is one of the safest places for women as compared to other capital cities."
Gupta said a study was being conducted to know the causes of acquittals in rape cases to devise ways and means to further increase the conviction rate.
Besides preventing any terrorist strike, police nabbed 41 militants including five Pakistani nationals and two Bangladeshis during the year "due to well-planned, innovative and professional approach," he said. Bureau Report
