Beijing, Sept 29: China is investigating a mass prostitution solicitation case involving a group of Japanese in Zhuhai city in South China's Guangdong province, the foreign ministry said today. While describing the incident as "extremely odious," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan said the reported activities of the Japanese violated Chinese law.

Kong said Chinese departments concerned are "digging into the case and will treat it according to law." "Foreigners in China must abide by Chinese laws," he said, urging the Japanese government to enhance education of its people to that end.

Earlier, Chinese newspapers reported on Saturday that a group of about 400 Japanese men, of age group 37 to 16, flew into Zhuhai purely for sex at a five-star hotel where 500 prostitutes from neighbouring cities came to serve them. The orgy lasted until September 18, the 72nd anniversary of the start of Japan's occupation of northeast China from 1931 to the end of World War II in 1945, 'China Daily' said.

The five-star hotel -- Zhuhai International Convention Centre Hotel -- where the orgy, which began on September 16, took place has since been shut down by police, another report said.

Meanwhile, Chinese web surfers, enraged by the acts of the Japanese, have called for a boycott of Japanese goods and newspapers ran flaming editorials about the three-day event which many saw as a deliberate slur on China's pride.
