Melbourne, Oct 16: Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash will be inducted into Australia's Tennis Hall of Fame in a celebration coinciding with the Australian Open final and the national day next January, Tennis Australia announced on Wednesday.
Cash, who won the Wimbledon title in 1987, was the last Australian to win the premier grass court tournament before current No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt clinched the 2002 Wimbledon crown.

His induction to the Hall of Fame, where he will join the likes of Rod Laver, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Margaret Court (Smith) and Ken Rosewall, will be held immediately before the Australian Open men's final on January 26.

Cash never won a major on home soil, losing in consecutive finals in 1987 and '88 to Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander. In Davis Cup, he helped Australia to two titles in a career that was curtailed due to serious back and Achilles injuries.

Cash lived in England and worked as a TV commentator until recently returning to Australia to pursue business interests.

"My relationship with Tennis Australia hasn't always been good over the years and it's nice to be able to start afresh now that I'm back in Australia and to work on building the future of tennis in Australia together," he said.

Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard said Cash's record on the ATP circuit and in Davis Cup made him a worthy inductee and the first player from the modern professional era into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame. Bureau Report
