Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee went on a fast-unto-death on Monday to protest police firing and use of tear gas shells on her supporters during ''jail bharo'' movement in Kolkata.
Official sources said police fired a shot, hurled twenty teargas gas cannisters and used lathis after thousands of AITC supporters participating in the ''jail bharo'' movement attacked them in front of district magistrate's bungalow administrative building in Kolkata.

He said police first used lathis and then lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the violent demonstrators. Mamata Banerjee also demanded an apology from Bhattacharjee for police action on her supporters.
The violence left many officials and civilians, including superintendent of police (east) Anuj Sharma, SDPO Kalyan Sinha and police constables injured. The agitators also ransacked the bungalow and administrative office and damaged vehicles including those of the DM.
