Kolkata, July 07: In the British Royal Navy's first visit to the Andaman and Nicobar islands in nearly half a century, two British warships would dock at Port Blair for three days. Guided missile destroyer HMS Liverpool and auxiliary fleet tanker Rfa Grey rover while sailing back from 'Exercise Flying Fish' in the South China Sea, would be in the union territory waters from today to July 09. The Royal Navy visit also would be the first in over a decade to an Indian port, British Deputy High Commission sources here said.

The visit, intended to extend growing professional interaction between the Indian and British Navy, would also discuss areas of professional and mutual interest. Events on the sidelines of the historic visit would include a formal reception on board HMS Liverpool, cricket and football matches, the sources said.

The two ships left the UK in January 2003 and visited ports of Shanghai and Sydney.

After Port Blair sojourn, the ships will transit the Suez Canal and call on ports in the Mediterranean before returning to their home base of Portsmouth in the end of July. The last royal navy ship to visit Port Blair was HMS Loch Insh in 1955, the sources added.
