Mumbai, Jan 02: Alarmed by severe drubbing received by Congress in Gujarat Assembly polls, the party in Maharashtra today indicated forging a pre-poll alliance with
the Sharad Pawar-led NCP to defeat "communal forces".
"NCP is our partner in the government for last three years. We are not doing anything to destabilise this alliance and the (pre-poll alliance) seems to be a natural, logical corollary," AICC general secretary Vayalar Ravi, who is also in-charge of party affairs in Maharashtra, told a news conference here. Asked categorically whether Congress will firm up a pre-poll alliance with NCP, Ravi said, "We have read their (NCP's) offer through media. The matter, once it comes to the party should be discussed seriously at the highest level."
The Congress high command would take this issue for consideration, he added.
Emerging out of extended meeting of the state Congress' executive held at Tilak Bhavan, the party headquarters in Central Mumbai, Ravi said, "Our aim is to defeat the enemy number one (communal forces) by uniting all secular forces under one banner."
Earlier, at the meeting, which lasted for over three hours, the party chalked out a programme for next three months to strengthen the organisation to take on various political challenges, MPCC chief Govindrao Adik, who was also present on the meet, said.
