A suspected suicide bomber arrested after a scuffle aboard an American airlines flight over the Atlantic had two explosive devices hidden in his shoes, the FBI said after conducting preliminary tests.
Preliminary analysis by the FBI laboratory in Washington has determined that there were two functional improvised explosive devices recovered from (the suspect's) sneakers. Additional tests are being conducted, The US justice department said in a statement on Sunday. The statement said Richard Reid, 28, will appear in court in Boston on Monday on charges of assault and intimidation of the flight crew.
The Paris-to-Miami American Airlines jetliner was diverted to Boston on Saturday after a flight attendant saw Reid apparently attempting to set fire to one of his sneakers from which a wire protruded. A struggle ensued with passengers and crew members finally subduing the suspect. Bureau Report
