Kuala Lumpur, Nov 08: The US State Department
warned today about risks to American citizens and US interests
in Malaysia, citing terrorist threats in Southeast Asia.
In a statement published on its website, the State
Department expressed concern about security in the eastern
state of Sabah, on Borneo Island, where unidentified gunmen
kidnapped six foreign workers from a resort last month.
Sabah is near the southern Philippines, which is home to Muslim separatists and the Muslim extremist Abu Sayyaf group.
The State Department said it had an "ongoing concern about the safety of American citizens and interests, especially along the east coast of Sabah due to the presence of terrorist organisations in Southeast Asia."
Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said he understood the State Department's concern but added that foreigners in Malaysia need not worry about their safety because of government security measures.
