New Delhi, Mar 22: It’s a tale of two families--one from Shimla in Himachal Pradesh and another from Manglapur village of East Champaran in Bihar. Their trauma is the same and they seek respite in the same. The stories begin in the backyard of Shimla, where 40-year-old Kishori Lal when came to know that both of his kidneys are damaged and needed transplant to survive. His wife Suman Devi came to his rescue and they reached PGI Chandigarh. After tests, doctors told them that their blood group did not match, as Kishori`s blood group was B positive, while Suman was A positive. Then, their hopeless search for some divine intervention began. Similarly, hundreds of kilometers away in Bihar, Mritunjaya Singh (38), a diabetic, last July came to know about his damaged kidneys. After initial tests at Patna, he came to know that his blood group (A positive) did not match to his wife Meera Devi (B positive). They too reached PGI Chandigarh. In Chandigarh, both the families at a private hospital were undergoing dialysis and here divine intervention took place. They came to know each other and learnt about the same trauma they were suffering from. Ultimately, the wives of Mritunjaya and Kishori came ahead to save their husbands and decided for `cross donation`. Since it was the first case of its kind in the country, doctors at PGI Chandigarh were surprised and examined both the couples and gave a go ahead for transplants. Treating it as an exceptional case, the authorisation committee of PGI Chandigarh too approved the two renal transplants. Now, Meera was to donate her kidney to Kishori Lal, while Suman to Mritunjya but without any ray of hope of successful transplants as it requires Rs 4 lakh each for the transplants. Unemployed Mritunjaya, MSc, says: "I have spent all my money. After spending Rs 1.50 lakh I have nothing to spare." He seeks help from somewhere he doesn`t know would come. On the other hand, Suman says, "Its over nine months but none of my relatives have even inquired about us." However, all is not lost. There is still a hope if magnanimous people come ahead with donations to have this rare example of humanity to survive. Such large hearted people need not wait.
