Beijing, Nov 23: China Fashion Week 2002 has kicked off in Beijing - showcasing the cutting edge of Chinese fashion.
The first show in China Fashion Week 2002 opened in a blaze of colour and fur in Beijing on Friday (November 22). Dozens of western and Chinese models showed off fur designs - and while in some circles fur may not be the fashion accessory of the moment, the local audience seemed to love it. The show mixed Western influences with traditional Chinese elements - including a touch of Peking Opera to give the proceedings that extra touch of class. The luxury designs came in all shapes and colours - aimed at keeping out the winter cold.

The catwalk show highlighted the design talents of Harbin-based NE Tiger Fur Co - but thankfully tiger fur was not part of their fashion range.

The company is regarded as China`s leading fur fashion company.

"I think it`s a good fashion show. It shows the latest fashion trends for this year featuring fur. It looks splendid and creative. It`s really good," said spectator Wang Xueyan.

China fashion week attracts the top names in the fashion industry as the mainland seeks to find a foothold in the world of haute couture.

Fashion week often helps young designers show off their work to an international audience.

Su Shi, a young Chinese designer, gave his view on up and coming fashion trends.

"I think purple and grey will be the main colours for next year. Simple styles with light colours will become more popular instead of strong colours and sharp edges. People who live in modern cities like to dress in a simple and comfortable way."

More than 40 fashion firms from China, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong are taking part in this year`s Fashion Week.
