Mumbai, Sept 08: The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) today predicted agricultural production to rise handsomely in the current fiscal owing to the three per cent above normal monsoon rains during the June-August period. "Agricultural production is expected to rise handsomely in the current fiscal," CMIE said in its monthly review of the the Indian economy.
Kharif sowing is almost complete by the end of August and the earlier set back due to a week-long delay in rains has been offset by widespread sowing, it said.
"While sowing in north-west has been completed, it is more than two-thirds complete in other regions," it added.
Paddy is planted on 79 per cent of normal area and coarse cereals have covered 95 per cent of normal sown area, it said, adding pulses are sown over 11.8 million hectares as against the normal sown area of 10.4 million hectares.
Oil seeds sowing has crossed the previous year's level of sown area and stood at 14.7 million hectares, it said.
Groundnut sowing is complete in Gujarat, while that of soyabean in Madhya Pradesh is higher than normal.
Sugarcane covered its normal area of 4.3 million hectares while area under cotton is 7.4 million hectares, which is about 84 per cent of the normal area.
Nine sub-divisions received excess rainfall and 25 subdivisions received normal rainfall, the CMIE said, adding only two sub-divisions - Kerala and north interior Karnataka - were rain deficit till August.
