Dhaka, Sept 23: Two weeks after the Shaheed Minar was sealed off with barbed wire and barricades, Bangladesh government has banned meetings at the martyr's memorial without permission of the government, reports said today.

"The Cabinet Committee on Law and order had endorsed the home ministry's decision of not allowing any meeting and use of microphone at the Shaheed Minar without prior permission of the government," The Daily Star reported. The seven-member committee in its meeting yesterday chaired by cooperatives minister Abdul Mannan Bhuyian was attended among others by law minister barrister Moudud Ahmed and home minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury.

Police, earlier enforced a ban on all kinds of meetings and functions at the Minar following the home ministry's directions in the wake of agitations by the students of Dhaka University and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The Minar is situated within the Dhaka University campus. The restrictions on assembly at the Minar have met with criticism from the main opposition Awami League, students' organisations, leaders of cultural bodies and NGOs.

This is the first time since its establishment some 50 years ago to honour the sacrifices of the martyrs who died during a protest in support of the Bangla language in 1952, that the government has imposed a ban on assembly at the Minar. Political parties and NGOs are questioning the restrictions and different bodies are planning to wage a movement to "free Shaheed Minar" from the clutches of the government.
