Mumbai, May 19: General Motors (India) is planning to introduce new models by this year-end even as it is planning to more than double its capacity at Halol in Gujarat by 2004. "New products are in the pipeline within this year which can be variants of the present models or from a different segment", president and MD, GM (India), Aditya Vij, told newspersons here today.
Investment at Halol so far had been Rs 1200 crore and would be increased by another Rs 180 crore this year to step up production from the present 12,000 to 40,000 units per annum by December 2004, he said at the launch of the first premium hatch-back "Opel Corsa Sail" in the city.
Company vice president (marketing and sales) Vinay Dixit said the introduction of "sail" has led to the creation of a new "B" segment and has been targeted at upcoming executives and premium segment car owners.
He said last year it had sold 7,500 units and this year with the launch of the new model, the company expects to double the number of units from the Corsa platform.
On the reintroduction of the Chevrolet brand "forester" in CBU form in India, he said so far 70 units have been sold and expect to "touch a good number by December".
The 1.4 litre Sail" has been priced at Rs 4.39 lakh in Delhi, Rs 4.64 lakh in Mumbai and Rs 4.43 lakh in Thane while the price of the 1.6 litre unit would be Rs 4.65 lakh, Rs 4.92 lakh and Rs 4.72 lakh respectively. Bureau Report
