Chennai, July 20: National power tariff policy, one of the five policy documents presently under preparation to supplement the recently-enacted Electricity Bill 2003, will be released by September this year, power secretary R V Shahi said on Saturday.
"The other four documents, including the National Power Policy and those relating to stand alone generation and distribution systems in rural areas and bulk purchase of power and distribution under franchisee arrangement will be ready in the next six months", Shahi said at an interactive session organised by CII Southern region.
The power tariff policy would contain sufficient guidelines to help the State Electricity Regulatory Commissions prescribe tariff on the emerging areas of power generation and distribution, being facilitated by the new Electricity Bill, he said.
Shahi said the Power Ministry would also soon come out with a notification on hydro-electric projects, specifying cases which required techno-economic clearance from the Centre. Only in exceptional cases, like very large hydro-electric projects, would such sanctions now be required.
Shahi said that stringent provisions had been incorporated in the Electricity Bill to curb theft of power and added that it was heartening to note that many states like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh had already come out with specific legislations to curb theft of power.
