Autos and taxis on Monday went off roads in the capital to protest government`s decision on installation of electronic fare metres.
About 54,000 autos and 13,000 taxis are participating in the one-day strike, said Gautam Jalali, President of Confederation of Public Transport Operators, which has given the call for the protest action. He said the confederation has gone on strike following failure of the talks with the government.
The Delhi government has ordered installation of electronic metres in all autos and taxis to prevent tampering and cheating of public.
Transport minister Ajay Maken said the government was acting in pursuance of the Supreme Court order which wanted tamper-proof metres in taxis and autos and added electronic metres were chosen as these were most tamper-proof. However, the confederation says the Supreme Court`s order does not make it mandatory to install electronic metres.
