Patna, Sept 10: A Samata Party legislator today began a fast-unto-death to protest against inadequate relief and inept handling of flood protection schemes by Bihar government in east and west Champaran districts. To express solidarity with Baidyanath Prasad Mahato, an MLA from Nautan in west Champaran district who launched his indefinite fast in front of the Vidhan Sabha here, BJP MP from Bettiah Madan Prasad Jayaswal and Samata MP from Bagaha Mahendra Baith also undertook a day-long fast with him.

They told reporters that the government had been informed about Mahato's decision well in advance to draw its attention towards the plight of the people, but it did not initiate action to mitigate the problems of flood victims. Mahato said he had raised the issue of floods during the monsoon session of Vidhan Sabha and the NDA had demonstrated on July 24 demanding immediate remedial measures to check erosion by Gandak and its tributaries in West Champaran, but no action was taken resulting in lakhs of people being rendered homeless and destruction of standing crop.

"Thousands of people are forced to live in the open on the embankments particularly in Nautan and Baeria blocks, but the government is yet to provide them relief," Mahato said.

The three leaders maintained that the technical advisory committee had recommended a Rs 3.5 crore scheme for permanent solution to floods and erosion in Nautan and Baeria blocks which was rejected by the government on account of resource crunch. Bureau Report
