Ujjain, Nov 27: Noted Hindi poet Shiv Mangal Singh Suman died here today following a protracted illness, family sources said. He was 86.

Suman had been suffering from breathing problems and other ailments for quite sometime, they said, adding the cremation would be held tomorrow morning. Besides being a noted poet, Suman was also known to be a great critic. His poems include ``Hillol`` (1939) ``Pralay Srajan`` (1950) ``Vidhya Himalaya`` (1960) ``Vani Ki Vyatha`` (1980) and ``Kate Anguthon Ki Vandanvaren``(1991). He wrote two criticisms --``Mahadevi Ki Kavya Sadhana`` (1951) and ``Geeti Kavya : Udyam Aur Vikas`` (1995) and one play ``Prakriti Purush Kalidas`` (1961).

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974 and was also honoured with the Soviet Nehru land award and Sahitya Akademy award the same year. Suman was also felicitated by several state governments.
Suman taught at various educational institutions in Gwalior and Ujjain. He was the vice chancellor of Vikram Vishwavidyalaya, Ujjain for over a decade. He was president, association of Indian universities during 1977-78.
Born in 1915 in Unnao (Uttar Pradesh), Suman did his doctorate in Hindi from the Benaras Hindu University.
