Filderstadt (Germany), Oct 09: Elena Dementieva and Anastasia Myskina continued the Russian hot streak at the Porsche Grand Prix after players from the country captured titles at the last five international events.
Dementieva, the world no. 8, ousted countrywoman Nadia Petrova, 6-3 6-3 and no. 9 Myskina also advanced into the quarterfinals against Alexandra Stevenson. The American quit with a lower back strain with the Russian ahead, 0-6 6-1 4-0.
"I just think one wants to be better than the other," Dementieva said of the up-and-coming Russians yesterday. "When I won Bali and Shanghai, Anastasia said she was just so motivated to do better."
World no. 7 Amelie Mauresmo - the highest-ranked player in action yesterday - defeated American Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.
Eight of the world's top 10 have entered the US$565,000 tournament, where Kim Cljisters and Justine Henin-Hardenne are in a battle for no. 1.

Myskina won the Kremlin Cup Sunday, after upsetting Henin-Hardenne in the Filderstadt final two weeks ago. During the first set, the 22-year-old Russian appeared sluggish after two of the biggest weeks of her career.

Stevenson, who hasn't gotten past the second round since Amelia Island in April, started the match by slugging winners all over the court before cooling off.

"It's difficult to get up three weeks in a row. It's difficult mentally and physically," Myskina said. "But then she started missing, so I thought I would try and it worked out."
