Srinagar, Aug 10: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would launch several populist schemes on Independence Day as part of efforts to provide "healing touch" to people other than those affected by militancy. "Sayeed is going to launch the recently formulated social security scheme for marginal workers in the state," highly placed official sources said here today.

The scheme envisages providing economic security and financial stability to 11.52 lakh workers in old age, they said. Workers having seasonal employment of around 90 days per year would benefit from the scheme, they added.

"The marginal workers to be covered under the scheme in phases include unorganised agriculture labourers, skilled and semi-skilled craftsmen, potters, carpenters, blacksmiths, rehriwallas, boatsmen and carpet weavers," the sources said. At present the state government is administering social security schemes on a limited scale with focus on senior citizens, widows, destitutes and physically challenged persons.

The state government would also launch Mediclaim - an insurance scheme for government employees at a nominal premium, the sources said, adding the scheme would be optional as it faced some opposition from a section of employees.

Sayeed, while announcing the scheme last month, described it as the first step towards bringing the entire population of the state under welfare schemes. Bureau Report
