Mumbai, Dec 01: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner, R S Sharma, was today arrested by Special Investigation Team for his alleged complicity in shielding prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, sit sources said. Sharma, who retired yesterday, was questioned by SIT for the fifth time today on alleged lapses in the fake stamp paper case registered by Bund Garden police station during his tenure as the Police Commissioner of Pune.
On November 25, the government instituted a departmental inquiry against him and served a copy of chargesheet listing eight instances of alleged lapses on his part.
Sharma was called for questioning this morning and grilled for five hours before being placed under arrest. He would be taken to a Pune court for remand. He has been questioned the maximum number of times among the police officers. Others, DCP Pradeep Sharma and ACP Ramakant Padaval were quizzed thrice each.
Sharma belongs to 1968 batch of IPS. He worked in almost all parts of the state and has the distinction of heading all major police commissionerates such as Nagpur, Pune, Thane and Mumbai, police sources said.
In the mid-1980s, he held senior position in the special protection group at New Delhi and was responsibility for the security of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
This stint in the SPG developed Sharma`s closeness to the Gandhi family and held him in good stead during the race for Mumbai city police chief in 2002 end in which Sharma ultimately succeeded, the sources said.
His tenure as commissioner of police of greater Mumbai remained turbulent all throughout. Barely five days after he took over as the police chief, Ghatkopar bomb blast accused Khawaja Yunus disappeared from police custody creating a controversy.
A series of bomb blasts took place during Sharma`s tenure as the Police Commissioner of Mumbai -- at Mulund on March 13, Ghatkopar on July 28 and twin blasts at Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar on August 25.
Like his predecessor M N Singh, Sharma was also likely to be elevated as the director general of police on November 01 but his name was dropped as controversy broke over his alleged role in shielding prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi in the fake stamp paper scam.
