London, Nov 13: World cricket officials today threatened to "remove international status" from venues that have been the sites of violence in three consecutive one-day matches in India. India won the third limited-over international against the West Indies at Rajkot today when the Caribbean team stormed off the field after fielder Vasbert Drakes had been hit by a bottle thrown by a spectator.

The violence follows incidents in Jamshedpur and Nagpur. In a statement today, the world governing body – the International Cricket Council - said it was considering heavy financial penalties and taking international matches from offending venues.

Malcolm Speed, chief executive of the ICC, said he might seek authority from the ICC safety and security committee to remove offending venues. "We have asked this committee to consider appropriate penalties for venues which consistently fail to meet their obligations in meeting minimum standards of safety," speed said.

"This is likely to include the ultimate sanction of withdrawing international status from a ground, combined witha heavy financial penalty."

Speed said he was pressing Indian officials for a explanation of today's violence. "In addition we have asked for details of the ground stewarding and security plans for the next four matches."
