Three students on Tuesday dragged their principal from her office onto the stage in the college auditorium. There she was gheraoed by about 150 students, who pulled her hair and clothes, beat her with fists and chairs. Reason: they wanted their students' union affiliated to the Delhi University Student's Union (DUSU). According to a police report, three students of the Aditi Mahavidyalaya in Bawana in north-west Delhi — president of the students' union Meena Dabas and two other members, Rekha Kodan and Anju — dragged their principal Sharda Lal into the auditorium, screaming that they wanted DUSU affiliation.

"I told them, it had to be sorted out by the secretary of higher education or the CM but they did not listen," says Lal.

Although the students had met the secretary of higher education some time ago they had not discussed the matter with him. While college security constables remained unaware a 100 metres away, two teachers, Anita Ghosh and Punya Patra, forced students to unlock the doors to the auditorium. "Dr Lal was on the floor being kicked. We tried to cover her by lying over her," says Ghosh, the physical education teacher, who is reported to have suffered 'blunt injuries'.

The students had also locked entry to all the corridors in the building.

Patra says the drama continued for 45 minutes till the students had spent their aggression and were convinced that the principal could not help them.

The police have arrested Meena, Rekha and Anju. Their version of the incident is that they had gone to meet the principal in her room, where they got into an argument with Ghosh, who was also present, and she dragged Dabas and Anju into the auditorium and beat them up. Lal has suffered injuries to her head, chest and stomach and is in shock. Doctors say there is some swelling in her lower back. She is under observation.
A referendum on the affiliation issue had been held on February 6, where the students had shot down the proposal. Teachers say, the "act of desperation" by Dabas was an attempt to impress the students before the academic year ended.
