Kuala Lumpur, Feb 14: Cyprus, a founder member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), is confident that the 13th NAM summit (NAM) here next week will continue its support for a just and peaceful unification of the country, its high commissioner to Malaysia Andreas Skarparis said. In the past, the non-aligned movement had supported Cyprus in its struggle for peaceful unification of the motherland and this issue had been one of the primary concerns of the movement, Skarparis said.

"Nam has been a staunch supporter for a peaceful solution because this is a very clear issue. This continuation of support will assist us in many ways in our peaceful struggle for unification," he told Bernama in an interview here. Skarparis, who is based in New Delhi, is concurrently accredited to Malaysia. He presented his credentials to the Malaysian kin Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail here last week.

The Mediterranean Island has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded the northern part of Cyprus. Since then the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots had been living separately. The Turkish invasion partitioned Cyprus with 34.4 per cent of the island territory under Turkish army occupation and the southern two-thirds inhabited by the Greek Cypriots.

In 1983, the Turkish-held area declared itself the "Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus" led by Rauf Denkatash but had won no recognition from any country except Turkey.
