Peshawar, Sept 03: Acting on a tip from local residents, Afghan authorities seized 100 anti-tank mines, mortar shells and remote control bombs in eastern Afghanistan, an Afghan government official said.
The seizure was made at an empty field in Nava district near Asadabad, the capital of Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province, Zahidullah Zahid, a Kunar province official, said late yesterday, speaking by satellite phone.
It was not immediately clear who the munitions belonged to, but Zahid said authorities believe that Taliban fugitives brought it from Pakistan to carry out attacks in Afghanistan. Taliban fugitives in recent months have stepped up attacks in many parts of Afghanistan.
Afghan authorities believe that Taliban and al-Qaeda fugitives are bringing weapons from neighbouring Pakistan to target government offices, police and soldiers. Pakistan has said it is doing whatever is possible to secure its western border. Bureau Report
