Other seeds advancing included No. 5 Barbara Schett of Austria, who beat Romania's Edina Gallovits 6-2, 6-4, No. 6 Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic, who topped France's Stephanie Foretz 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2, and No. 8 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro, who defeated Slovakia's Dominika Nociarova 6-2, 6-3.
However, fourth-seeded Anca Barna of Germany, was eliminated by Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Cervanova was a semifinalist last year.
