Madurai, July 18: Police and revenue officials seized as many as 15 lorries involved in illegal sand mining in the Vaigai river bed in the last three days, officials said today. On a tip off that some lorry owners were mining sand on a largescale in the absence of the revenue employees, the police officials led by assistant commissioner of police Manivannan and Rdo Ayyanar held surprise checks and seized the lorries. The collector levied a fine of rs.25,000 on each lorry. The sand mining had badly hit the river bed springs along the Vaigai river, and also led to fall in ground water level. Bureau Report
