Ahmedabad, October 27: His morning starts in an ordinary way, by offering prayers to his temple deity, but here comes the twist. In the sanctum sanctorum stands the idol of actor Amitabh Bachchan. To Gabhaji Thakor, the owner of a shop selling paan, or betel leaf, Bachchan is a living god.
"I eat Bachchan, I drink Bachchan, I sleep Bachchan. I owe my existence to Bachchan. I worship him. Chanting his name gives me immense peace of mind," Thakor told IANS.
He explained the logic behind this with pride, "What`s so unusual? God exists in every living being, so He does in Bachchan as well. I see my god in him (Bachchan).
Thakor has visited Bachchan`s temple in Kolkata and fans from that city have also visited his temple here, located next to his kiosk selling paan "I have not seen a bigger Bachchan fan in Gujarat," said film critique Vijay Patel.
"In my 50 years in film, television and on stage, I have not met anyone as obsessed with Bachchan," echoed Subhash Brahmbhatt, eminent theatre personality and principal of the H.K. Arts College here.
Thakor also has Bachchan`s name tattooed on his arm. He has a collection of about 1,000 audio cassettes from Bachchan`s films. He often parrots dialogues of the superstar from his films even during casual conversation.
However, his greatest wish is yet to be fulfilled. Thakor is yet to meet the Big B - as Bachchan is known.
"I saw him once when he had visited the Sports Club here in the mid-80s. I could not get to meet him since there was a crowd around him. "I have written him nearly a 1,000 letters. He did write back on a couple of occasions and sent his photographs, but I am yet to meet him," said Thakor.
A meeting with the star will be like a pilgrimage for Thakor.
"Meeting Bachchan is as sacred for me as a pilgrimage to Haridwar is for a Hindu," he said
