Srinagar, Sept 28: Buoyed by the response of tour operators of Malaysia and Singapore, Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to make concerted efforts to tap high potential tourist markets in South East Asian countries in collaboration with Indian high commissions there. "While Kashmir continues to be a popular tourist destination in these countries, what impedes the tourist traffic flow from there to Kashmir is their apprehension about safety of tourists," Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Tourism Ghulam Ahmad Mir told.
Mir, who returned after a seven-day tourism promotion tour in Singapore and Malaysia here yesterday said "we expect foreign visitors in good number as our efforts to dispel security concerns of the foreigners have yielded good results".
"Our efforts to convince the world about improved security situation in the state would have the desired effect and they will visit Kashmir in good numbers," he added.
Mir said during interaction with tour operators and local journalists in Singapore and Malaysia "we explained that tourism in Kashmir has been revived and there has been 8 to 9 times increase in tourist traffic, mostly domestic, this summer".
To remove their anxiety about the safety of tourists in the state, especially in the valley, a proposal was mooted for bringing members of the travel trade from these potential tourist countries to Jammu and Kashmir on familiarization tours, he said.
Simultaneously, presence of Jammu and Kashmir tour operators, whose number was as high as 19 from both the capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu, came handy to build confidence in the local travel trade.
