Beijing, Sept 25: China today welcomed Russia's denial of visa to the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama as "positive." “I have seen the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman in this regard and feel positive about this decision by the Russian government," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan told reporters.

Responding to a question on Moscow's denial of visa to the Dalai, Kong noted that the just-released Sino-Russian joint statement clearly stated that both sides are clearly committed to maintain the territorial integrity of the two countries and have a strong desire in this respect. "Both countries will stick to the sovereignty and territorial integrity on the core question of Taiwan and Tibet," Kong said.

Reports from Moscow on Tuesday said that Russia decided against issuing a visa to the Dalai Lama keeping in mind the country's national interests.

Beijing views Dalai Lama as a 'separatist' who is working to split Tibet from China. Moreover, China is opposed to foreign government leaders meeting with the Dalai in any capacity. Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, who held talks with Mikhail Kasyanov here yesterday, expressed the Chinese government's gratitude to Russia for adhering to the 'one-China' policy.

"China appreciated Russia's adherence to the one-China policy, and its support for China in important and sensitive issues involving Taiwan, Tibet, human rights and fighting terrorism," the official Xinhua news agency quoted Wen as saying.
