Srinagar, May 27: Jammu and Kashmir government has earmarked an amount of rs 200 crore this year for conservation of the famous Dal Lake, which includes relocation of houseboats and setting up of a sewerage treatment plant. "The government is spending around Rs 200 crore during the current financial year on the conservation of Dal Lake," finance minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh said at an interactive session held by an NGO, Ecosense, at Dachigam National Park yesterday.

Beigh said under the conservation programme, all the houseboats in the lake would be relocated to minimise pollution followed by construction of a sewerage treatment plant to take care of sewage emanating from the houseboats.

The minister blamed official lethargy and callous administration for the present state of affairs of the lake.
Beigh said law alone was not enough to protect the environment and underscored the need for sensitising people, especially the younger generation, about the need to conserve the environment.
