Los Angeles, Sept 15: The oldest sister of Venus and Serena Williams has been shot dead in the crime-plagued neighbourhood where the tennis stars got their start, authorities said. Yetunde Price, 31, was shot in the early morning hours yesterday following a "confrontation" outside a residence in the Los Angeles area of Compton, said police spokesman Richard Pena.
"One of the local residents pulled a weapon out and began to shoot, and the female victim was shot in the upper torso and transported to hospital where she died," said Pena. Pena said the suspects either fled the scene immediately or barricaded themselves in a single-family residence for a couple of hours.
There was a tense standoff near the residence but when swat team members stormed the house they found it empty.
According to police, deputies were on patrol in Compton, south of downtown Los Angeles, when they heard multiple gunshots.
Price and a male companion had been in a white sports utility vehicle when they became "involved in a confrontation with some local residents," Sheriff's Deputy Scott Butler said.
Homicide detectives and gang unit police were investigating the crime.

"They are at the scene, talking to witnesses, trying to determine exactly what happened," said butler.
Police were also interviewing the man who was with price when she was shot.
